Hyderabad: At least 10 gates of the Jurala project were lifted on Thursday evening due to the massive influx of floodwater caused by heavy rainfall in the upstream Krishna river catchment areas in Karnataka.
Currently, 60,000 cusecs of water are being released from the Jurala project, with officials warning that the inflow is likely to increase further by midnight. This may necessitate the lifting of additional gates to release more floodwater.
The project has a total of 79 spillway gates for flood management.
This marks the first time in May that the Jurala project has had to lift its gates to manage floodwater, an unusual occurrence during the dry season. The Krishna River, along with its tributary, the Tungabhadra River, is experiencing significant flooding for the first time this season.
The floodwater released from Jurala is now heading toward the Srisailam dam, with an estimated inflow of nearly 1 lakh cusecs expected to reach the reservoir by Friday.
Officials have urged residents in the river’s catchment areas to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the situation develops.
