WB Assembly briefed on multi-agency probe into alleged ‘Sebaashray camp’ scam

West Bengal authorities have launched an extensive CID and STF probe into alleged illegalities at the 'Sebaashray Camp' medical initiative. Complaints include the misuse of government hospital equipment, deployment of junior doctors, distribution of expired medicines, and severe patient injuries

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday told the state Assembly that the government is working concertedly to nail the culprits involved in a big scam involving TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee-launched ‘Sebaashray Camp’, organised to provide free medical aid to the needy.

Making a statement in the House on Falta MLA Debangsu Panda’s allegations with regard to the Sebaashray camps, Adhikari sought to assure that the state CID, STF, South 24 Parganas district police, along with medical experts, are holding an extensive investigation in this regard.

The chief minister asserted that no one involved will be allowed to go scot-free, stating, “Time will speak”. He said that X-ray and USG machines, along with expired medicines, were seized, and the misuse of government apparatus, infrastructure, money, and doctors in Sebaashray camps held at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas and Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district are being probed.

The chief minister said that every complaint by those who suffered at these medical camps is being treated as an FIR, asserting that no one responsible will be allowed to go scot-free.

He said that a number of FIRs have been lodged in this regard at Bishnupur police station in South 24 Parganas district. Producing photographs before the House, Adhikari said a child lost a hand, another was rendered physically handicapped, and a woman lost a leg owing to alleged illegal acts under the programme.

The chief minister said that government hospital apparatus like USG and X-ray machines and doctors were illegally taken to these privately organised camps, held at Nandigram and Diamond Harbour. Stating that a medical college student wrote to the chief minister’s office regarding their portrayal as a doctor, he asserted that the alleged acts amount to murder.

Maintaining that the accused will not be able to escape the grave charges, Adhikari said all involved persons will be brought to book. He read out a letter by a junior doctor of Diamond Harbour Hospital, where it was alleged that he and other such medics were made to work at the Sebaashray camps.
