Hyderabad: Finance Minister T Harish Rao has said the State government treats all communities and religions equally and respects them. The government is working tirelessly for the welfare of these communities.

He said that during the last seven years, an amount of Rs. 6,644 crores was spent for the welfare of minority communities. “When Telangana State was formed there were only 12 residential schools for the minority community, the TRS government established 192 residential schools for the minorities,” he said.

The government firmly believes that the girls of the minority community should be at the forefront of education. “Around 50 per cent of the residential schools are for girls. There is a huge response from the community, the total number of schools in the State are 204 and 1.14 lakh boys and girls are studying in the schools,” he said.

He further said that to tackle the problem of dropout of girls after they finished Class 10, the government upgraded the 121 minority residential schools into residential colleges. “The enrollment of minority girls was 18 per cent previously, now it has gone up to 42 per cent. It is heartening to see such a massive increase,” the Minister said, and added 54 minority residential school buildings are under construction.

Harish Rao, said that the State government is paying Rs. 5,000 a month for imams and muezzins in the State, funds are also provided for the upkeep of the religious places. He said during the Ramzan and Christmas the government provides gifts to the communities.
