Kolkata: The West Bengal government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the September 27 clash at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) here, an official said on Wednesday.
Three cases have been registered at Panchasayar police station over a clash between a section of students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), a consumer organisation associated with the RSS, during a programme on the institute’s campus on September 27. Several people were injured in the incident.
The SIT will be headed by Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Agarwal, he said.
Other members of the team include Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department Sparsha Nilangi, CID Deputy Superintendent of Police Kaushik Ghosh, Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Anti-Rowdy Section Salil Roy, Eastern Suburban Division Assistant Commissioner of Police Tushar Kanti Ghosh and Detective Department Inspector Hirak Dalapati, he added.
A notification issued by the Home and Hill Affairs Department late on Tuesday said the team would investigate the FIRs registered in connection with the incident.
“The SIT will submit its first report to the government by Thursday (October 1),” the order said.
Students alleged that ABGP members attacked them after they protested against a political programme on the campus, while the organisation claimed that its members were assaulted.
One of the FIRs was lodged suo motu by the police, while the other two were lodged on the basis of complaints filed by ABGP functionary Anjan Sinha and SRFTI Dean Sukanta Majumdar.
