Why Your Hands Age Faster Than Your Face

Hands are often neglected in skincare routines despite being one of the first areas to show ageing. Sun exposure, frequent washing, and thinner skin make them vulnerable, but simple steps like sunscreen, moisturiser, and protective gloves can keep them healthy and youthful.

Ageing of hands and face: Most people invest time in skincare routines for their face, but often forget about one body part that can reveal age just as quickly, their hands. From fine lines and wrinkles to age spots and thinning skin, hands are often among the first areas to show signs of ageing.

Unlike the face, hands are constantly exposed to the sun, water, soaps, cleaning products and changing weather conditions. Frequent handwashing and sanitising can strip away natural oils, leaving the skin dry and making fine lines appear more noticeable. At the same time, the skin on the back of the hands is naturally thinner and contains less fat, making signs of ageing easier to spot over time.

Sun exposure also plays a major role. While many people remember to apply sunscreen to their face, their hands are often left unprotected, allowing UV rays to contribute to pigmentation, wrinkles and a loss of skin elasticity.

The good news is that caring for your hands doesn’t require an elaborate routine. Applying sunscreen to the backs of your hands before stepping outdoors, using a moisturiser after washing them and wearing gloves while using harsh cleaning products can go a long way in keeping the skin healthy.

Your face may get most of the attention, but your hands work just as hard every day. Giving them a little extra care now can help them stay softer, smoother and healthier for years to come.
