Jagtial: Mild tension prevailed at AB convention hall, Jagtial, when a wine shop applicant made a suicide attempt demanding excise department officials to conduct draw of lots for wine shop number 043. Police deployed at the spot swung into action and foiled his attempt and counselled him.
According to police, K Ramesh of Chalgal filed an application for Sarangapur mandal wine shop (no 043). However, excise officials, who allocated wine shops licenses to applicants through draw of lots on Saturday, postponed Sarangapur wine shop for two days as the shops got only six applications.
As per norms, draw of lots should not be carried out for shops which got below ten applications. So, officials postponed Sarangapur wine shop. Despite six applicants’ requests, officials failed to take up the draw of lots. Upset over officials’ attitude, Ramesh doused himself with petrol and ran into nearby agricultural fields and tried to light himself up. Alert policeme chased Ramesh and foiled his attempt. Expressing his dismay, Ramesh said he failed to get a single wine shop though he applied for more shops by spending Rs 18 lakhs. Officials have postponed Sarangapur wine shop on the ground that less number of applications were filed. Would officials give money to applicants if a number of applications were filed to a shop? He questioned.
