Sangareddy: As the rainy season nears an end, the winter migration of birds from Europe, Northern Asian countries, China and some other Himalayan regions has begun to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Several wintering birds such as the Grey Wagtail, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Greenish Warbler, Montagu’s Harrier, Western Marsh Harrier, Tibetan Sand Plover, Isabelline Wheatear, Black Headed bunting, Grey-necked bunting, and many other birds were sighted in various wildlife sanctuaries across Telangana during the last fortnight. Meanwhile, some passage birds, which migrate from Europe to the shorelines of the Bay of Bengal, were also sighted taking a brief halt at various places in the State.

Seasoned wildlife photographer Sriram Aditya sighted a Tibetan Sand Plover at Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary in Medak district on Monday. The bird usually heads towards the Eastern shorelines in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu after a brief halt in Telangana. Another seasoned birder Rajashekhar Muddam captured an Isabelline Wheatear at Yenkatala in Vikarabad district.

Speaking to Telangana Today, well-known wildlife photographer Sriram Reddy, who sighted an Asian Brown Flycatcher at Narsapur, said as many as 280 bird species had migrated to Telangana or were sighted while passing through Telangana so far in history from various parts of the globe throughout the year. Most of these birds will migrate only during the winter, he said, adding that they migrate to India to escape from cold weather and return to their native places after the harsh winter.

Lakhs of migrant birds will be seen across Telangana during winter, considered the best time for wildlife photographers and birders to go on birding trips.
