Chamarajanagar: In a tragic incident, a 52-year-old woman allegedly took her own life after the government acquired part of her ancestral land for the construction of an Ambedkar Bhavan. The incident took place in Dodda Alathur village of Hanur taluk, Chamarajanagar district.
The deceased has been identified as Rajamma. She reportedly owned 90 cents of ancestral agricultural land, which she and her family depended on for their livelihood. According to locals, revenue department officials had recently acquired 20 cents of her land for the proposed Ambedkar Bhavan project. Deeply disturbed by the development, Rajamma is said to have hanged herself in her field early Saturday morning.
The incident triggered outrage in the village, with angry residents staging a protest by placing Rajamma’s body on the road. Villagers blamed the officials for her death, alleging that the acquisition was done without proper consultation or compensation.
“She was already struggling to manage her family with limited land. Losing a portion of it pushed her into despair,” villagers said.
Protesters have demanded the immediate presence of senior district officials at the spot and have refused to conduct the final rites until their grievances are addressed. They held the authorities directly responsible for Rajamma’s death and called for urgent intervention.
Police from Ramapura station rushed to the scene and initiated an investigation. The tense atmosphere in the village has prompted calls for the district administration to take swift steps to resolve the matter and prevent further escalation.
