Hyderabad: Alleged harassment for dowry is suspected to have led to a woman’s death, allegedly by suicide, after she was found hanging in her house at Shaheen Nagar in Balapur around midnight on Wednesday.
The woman, identified as Meraj (28), had a love marriage with Abdul Sayeed, a private employee and the couple had two children. According to the victim’s family, at the time of her wedding, Meraj’s family gave cash and gold ornaments as dowry to Sayeed. However, Sayeed, his mother and family allegedly began harassing her for more.
“They demanded money and harassed her both mentally and physically. She was also assaulted several times for refusing to get additional dowry. Two months ago, elders from both sides had worked out a compromise between the couple and Sayeed assured there would be no issues further,” police said. However, her in-laws are said to have found her hanging in her bedroom and informed Meraj’s siblings. She was shifted to a private hospital, where she was declared dead.
Based on a complaint from her brother, the Balapur police booked a case of dowry death and have taken up investigation.
