Woman, her son killed in accident on Khammam-Devarapalli Greenfield highway
A woman and her 17-year-old son were killed after a speeding mini-truck rammed their car on the newly opened Khammam-Devarapalli Greenfield Highway. Two others, including the car driver and the mini-truck driver, suffered grievous injuries and were shifted to Hyderabad.
Khammam: A woman and her son were killed, while a couple of others were injured, in a road accident on the newly opened Khammam-Devarapalli Greenfield National Highway in the district on Thursday.
The deceased, Pokabathini Sujatha (38) and Pavan (17) of Gandhi Nagar in Chintakani mandal in the district, were travelling in a car towards Hyderabad when the incident took place. A speeding mini-truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into the car, killing the duo on the spot.
Pavan had recently secured admission to an engineering college in Hyderabad. His father, Narasihma Rao, who was driving the car, and the mini-truck driver suffered grievous injuries. The injured were shifted to Hyderabad for treatment. Both vehicles were badly damaged in the accident.
The mini-truck driver was trapped inside the cabin after the vehicle overturned on hitting the car. Police had to use a crane to lift the mini-truck and rescue the driver. Khammam Rural police registered a case in connection with the incident and took up the investigation.
The Greenfield highway was opened for traffic on August 1. It begins at Tallampadu in Khammam district and terminates at Devarapalli on National Highway 16, near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.
Spanning a total length of 165 kilometres, the highway covers 90 km in Telangana and 75 km in Andhra Pradesh. Toll plazas, entry and exit points on the road in Khammam district are yet to be streamlined.amlined.
