Peddapalli: In a shocking incident, a woman stayed with the dead body of her sister for four days in Peddapalli town. The incident came to light on Monday when neighbours alerted police about foul smell emanating from the house.

According to police, Maroju Swathi and her younger sister Swetha were staying in a rented house in Pragathingar of the town. The sisters’s parents are no more and they were working as domestic help for a living.

Younger sister Swetha (24) was suffering from fever for the past 10 days. Swathi did not take her to the hospital since she couldn’t afford it. Four days ago, Swetha died after her condition deteriorated.

Instead of performing the final rites of her sister, Swathi stayed with Swetha’s body because she didn’t have money for the funeral. She did not even inform the neighbours about the death.

Peddapalli CI Pradeep Kumar and SI Rajesh, on receiving information about the foul smell, checked the house and found Swetha’s body. Police registered a case and began investigations.

Six years ago, the two sisters had continued living with the body of their grandmother instead of performing final rites due to poverty.

Swetha’s body was shifted to Peddapalli hospital for autopsy.
