World Rivers Day: Forum for a Better Hyderabad visits Singur Dam Project

The Forum for a Better Hyderabad marked World Rivers Day with a visit to the Singur Dam Project, where students, faculty and conservation enthusiasts learnt about the Manjeera River, water supply, irrigation, power generation, archaeology and regional heritage

Hyderabad: On the occasion of World Rivers Day, the Forum for a Better Hyderabad (FBH) organised a visit to the Singur Dam Project on the Manjeera River, with the participation of students, faculty members and river conservation enthusiasts.

The participants gained first-hand knowledge about the ayacut, water supply system and the history of the region associated with the river.

FBH Chairman Prof. Vedakumar said, “A river is not merely a flow of water. Drinking water, agriculture, village life, groundwater, nature and history are all interconnected with it. Understanding how Manjeera water is stored and distributed, and how projects built across the river influence people’s lives, is essential. The first step towards protecting a river is to understand it.”

Madhusudhan, Deputy Executive Engineer, Singur Project, Irrigation Department, explained the history of the project, reservoir capacity, drinking water supply to Hyderabad, release of irrigation water to the Ghanapur ayacut and power generation.

The participants also visited the Open Museum of the State Archaeology Department. The Deccan Heritage Academy Trust (DHAT) expressed its willingness to support the maintenance of the open museum. The participants also inspected the Mission Bhagiratha water supply system, whose functioning was explained by Engineer Nagendra.

Forum members, faculty members of JBR Group institutions, students, representatives of the Deccan Heritage Academy Trust, staff and students of Oxford Grammar School, and river conservation enthusiasts participated in the programme.
