The WFP received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for the work in reducing hunger and malnutrition across the world. The WFP country director stressed the need to bring the government, the private sector and NGOs such as Telangana Jagruthi to come together to fulfil the vision of a hunger and malnutrition free India.
In this regard, he congratulated Kavitha and requested that she convey his appreciation to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for the effort to end hunger and malnutrition in the State. In particular, the WFP head commended the State government on the Arogya Lakshmi initiative. The provision of mid-day meals at government hospital for not just the mother and child but also for attendants was a measure that was particularly appreciated by Bishow Parajuli
Kavitha explained in detail the good work done by the State government in terms of increasing access to food and eradicating hunger, especially in light of pandemic. She also spoke about the initiatives of the Telangana government in fortifying rice and other crops to combat malnutrition. She highlighted the work done by the government in setting up food banks for migrant workers.
She explained the steps taken by the State government resulting in building 20,000 micro food processing units across the State. “We are committed to a multi-pronged approach to end the issue of hunger and malnutrition through innovative policies and progressive measures on the ground,” Kavitha said.
