Telangana SC/ST Commission seeks report on alleged assault of BRS MLAs

The Telangana State Commission for SCs and STs has summoned DGP CV Anand and sought a detailed report within 48 hours on the alleged assault, intimidation and inappropriate conduct by police against BRS legislators at the Assembly gate.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Commission for SCs and STs issued notices to DGP CV Anand seeking a detailed and comprehensive report within 48 hours on the alleged assault, intimidation and inappropriate conduct by police against BRS legislators belonging to SC and ST communities at the Assembly gate on Monday.

The Commission chairman Bakki Venkataiah took serious note of the complaint submitted by BRS legislators and directed the DGP to conduct an immediate and impartial inquiry, initiate action against the officials responsible and submit an action-taken report along with evidence, including CCTV footage and other video recordings.

The Commission said the alleged violence, humiliation or obstruction of SC/ST legislators raised serious concerns over their dignity, safety and lawful rights. The notices were served after BRS MLAs Kova Laxmi, Anil Jadhav, Manikrao and Vijayudu submitted a representation to the Commission, requesting necessary action.

In their representation, the BRS legislators alleged that police stopped them while they were proceeding to attend the Assembly session and abused and physically assaulted them. They said several BRS legislators sustained injuries and required medical treatment.

They termed the incident an attack on the dignity and constitutional rights of elected representatives from SC/ST communities. They said the police behaved inappropriately with tribal woman MLA Kova Laxmi and physically assaulted SC/ST legislators including Anil Jadhav, Manikrao and Vijayudu.

The legislators also alleged that police insisted they remove their T-shirts before allowing them into the Assembly, calling the action humiliating and an affront to their dignity and self-respect. They urged the Commission to preserve and independently examine CCTV, video and police body-camera footage and consider the medical records of the injured legislators.

The BRS MLAs sought a separate inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of Kova Lakshmi, appropriate protection and justice for SC/ST representatives, and clear guidelines to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
