Yet another roof collapse reported at MGM Hospital in Warangal

Another roof collapse incident was reported at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Warangal on Tuesday, a day after senior health officials inspected the premises. No one was injured, while patients, relatives and BRS activists raised concerns over the hospital’s safety.

Warangal: Yet another incident of roof collapse took place at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in Warangal on Tuesday, and no one was injured in the incident.

The incident occurred a day after Health Secretary Dr. Christina Z Chongthu and Director of Medical Education Dr. N Vani visited the hospital on Monday to take stock of the situation after the concrete slabs from the roof collapsed at Arogyasri ward of the hospital last Sunday.

Three patients, two sanitation workers and a few others were injured in that incident. The latest incident took place at the RICU and physiotherapy departments, where a portion of the roof plaster fell down. A potential tragedy was averted as no one was present in the area during the incident.

Patients and their relatives were expressing concern over the building’s safety following these repeated incidents. They wanted the officials to inspect the premises and undertake necessary repairs immediately.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed for some time at the MGMH as police obstructed former Warangal (West) MLA Dasyam Vinay Bhaskar as well as BRS activists, who arrived at the hospital to speak to the authorities after learning about the incident.

A scuffle broke out between the police and BRS activists at gate number 4 near the MGMH mortuary. BRS activists expressed outrage, alleging that the police had manhandled Vinay Bhaskar, who collapsed after being jostled by the police.

On the other hand, police also prevented media representatives from entering MGM Hospital. Officers stationed at the main gates, as well as at other gates around the hospital premises, blocked the media personnel from gaining entry.

It might be recalled that Dr. Chongthu, during her Monday’s visit, directed engineering officials to ensure the safety and maintenance of government hospital buildings, while district Collector Dr. Satya Sharada admitted that there was dilapidation to some extent in the hospital’s civil structure.
