Kothagudem: A youth was attacked and killed by a ‘gang’ over old enmity in Manuguru town in the district, and the incident created panic in the town.

According to police, the deceased, Simhadri Shiva Kumar alias Shiva (28) of Gandhi Bomma Centre in the town, was working as an interior designer in Hyderabad. He came to Manuguru on Thursday morning in view of the Rakhi festival.

The leader of ‘MK gang’, Ramakanth alias Rammi of Bombay Colony, called and asked Shiva to come to Netaji Ground at Gandhi Bomma Centre. Shiva went there accompanied by his neighbour, Uday Kumar. Upon arrival, they were confronted by Ramakanth, Bharat, Sadiq, Vinay, Dinesh, Jampayya, Prasad and others.

The assailants, who were waiting there as part of a planned attack, assaulted Shiva en masse. They also attacked Uday Kumar when he tried to intervene. Shiva’s family rushed him to a local hospital in the afternoon, and doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Shiva’s family stated that Ramakanth and his associates had previously threatened to kill Shiva if he visited Manuguru. They harboured a grudge against Shiva over a dispute involving a youth of Sundaraiah Nagar, Sathish, who was a former employee of Shiva.

The police have registered a case following a complaint by Shiva’s father, Veerabhadra Chary, and launched an investigation into the incident, Inspector of Police Naga Babu informed.

The locals complained that the youths, who were addicted to drugs like ganja and formed gangs, picked fights and resorted to violence against anyone who stood in their way. The incident was an example of such a disturbing trend.

The police must take strict action against those performing bike stunts on the roads, groups of three or more harassing the public and gangs roaming at night without valid reason; failure to do so could lead to dangerous consequences in the future, the locals said with concern.
