100 per cent sewerage treatment in Hyderabad: 39 new STPs to come up in ORR areas
Hyderabad is pushing towards becoming India’s first city with 100% sewage treatment. The HMWS&SB will build 39 new STPs across the ORR region, addressing the growing demand from rapidly urbanizing areas. Six more plants are set to be commissioned this month.
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has stepped up efforts towards realizing the ambitious goal of the city achieving 100 per cent sewage treatment capacity. Former MA&UD Minister, K.T.Rama Rao had envisioned making Hyderabad the first city in India to achieve 100% sewerage treatment capacity.
The water board is pursuing to build 39 new Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) in the areas of the Outer Ring Road (ORR), the proposal for which was made during the previous BRS government.
There is a major demand from the ORR areas to resolve sewerage woes resulting from the emergence of new residential colonies, high-rise apartments, villas, and group housing schemes. Many representatives of these colonies have also made a plea to the HMWS&SB to resolve the sewerage issue.
“The new proposed 39 STPs are coming up in seven urban local bodies (ULBs) consisting of 12 municipalities. The capacity of these 39 STPs is 972 million litres per day (MLD), and the acquisition of the land to build them is already at a brisk pace. Soon, the foundation stone will be laid to start the work,” a senior HMWS&SB official told Telangana Today.
Areas where new STPs will be built include Ameenpur, ICRISAT, Nerella (Tellapur), Gowdavalli, Peerzadiguda, Kuntloor, Meerpet Talab, Raviryal, Kothwalguda, Chitrapuri Colony, Hydershahkote, and Patel Cheruvu.
The previous BRS government proposed 31 STPs with a capacity of 1,259.50 MLD, at an investment of Rs 3,866 crore, and the majority of them were commissioned, said the official. The proposed areas have already been getting potable water for the past couple of years, and the water board is supplying Krishna and Godavari water on alternate days. Now, the sewerage woes would also get addressed, the official admitted.
Meanwhile, the water board is gearing up to commission five new STPs at Nallagandla (7 MLD), Mullakathuwa Cheruvu (25 MLD), Shivalaynagar (14 MLD), Palapitta Park (7 MLD), Attapur-1 (64 MLD), and Amberpet (212.5 MLD), by the end of this month.
• Sewerage coverage of HMWSSB grew from erstwhile MCH area of 169 square km to GHMC area covering 518 sq km and subsequently up to ORR for 1,450 sq km
• Currently covering an area of nearly 700 sq km with more than 3.5 lakh manholes and nearly 7,000 km length of sewerage network
