Hyderabad: A 119-year-old steam locomotive at South Central Railway’s (SCR) headquarters in Secunderabad continues to fascinate commuters and visitors with a unique evening display that recreates the sights and sounds of a moving steam engine.
Stationed prominently at Rail Nilayam in the heart of Secunderabad, the heritage locomotive, popularly known as “Sir Alec,” is located along the busy corridor connecting Sangeet ‘X’ Road with Mettuguda and Tarnaka.

Its attractive appearance has made it a very familiar landmark for people travelling through the area.
Built in 1907 by Kitson and Co. in Leeds, the UK, the locomotive was originally associated with the Barsi Light Railway’s narrow-gauge system. After surviving the transition from steam powered trains to modern locomotives, the engine has been preserved as a reminder of the technological journey of Indian Railways.

In the past, the SCR had also undertaken efforts to enhance its presentation. Back then, the locomotive has been refurbished with polyurethane paint and illuminated with decorative lighting, giving it a distinctive appearance after dusk.
What sets the exhibit apart is the simulated operation arranged during the evenings. Artificial steam and smoke effects, combined with a locomotive sound system, recreate the atmosphere of a steam engine preparing to move.

The display is generally showcased from sunset until night, turning the heritage installation into an attraction for passers-by.
The locomotive also has an educational role. Its presence at the SCR headquarters provides an opportunity for visitors, particularly younger generations, to understand how steam engines operated and how railway technology evolved over the decades.
