Thrissur: At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in a massive explosion at a fireworks manufacturing and storage unit in Thrissur during preparations for the annual Thrissur Pooram, officials said on Tuesday.
The blast, which occurred at a shed in Mundathikkode, triggered a major fire and sent thick plumes of smoke across the area, causing panic among workers and nearby residents. Around 40 people were reportedly present at the site when the explosion took place, many of whom sustained burn injuries, with several in critical condition. Rescue operations were initially hampered due to intense flames and the presence of explosive materials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased, and ₹50,000 for the injured.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed that the entire state machinery be placed on high alert to ensure swift rescue and medical response. He instructed officials to provide specialised treatment to the injured and, if necessary, arrange for expert doctors from outside the state.
Health Minister Veena George ordered emergency arrangements at Thrissur Medical College and other nearby hospitals. Officials confirmed that multiple injured persons are undergoing treatment, including several in serious condition in burn units.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on possible safety lapses in the storage and handling of fireworks.
The explosion has cast a shadow over the upcoming festival at the Vadakkunnathan Temple, one of Asia’s largest cultural gatherings known for its grand fireworks displays, which attract over a million visitors each year.
