Hyderabad: A 12-year-old youngster Shaurya, who was suffering from severe form of Covid-19 infection, has made a full recovery at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Secunderabad after 65-days of support on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), the medical device for critical Covid patients that can perform the role of heart and lungs.
Shaurya was flown-in from Midland Healthcare and Research Centre, Lucknow in a chartered flight to Hyderabad and admitted to KIMS for ECMO therapy.
The care, which was provided by a team of doctors led by Program Director, KIMS Heart and Lung Transplant Institute, Dr Sandeep Attawar, involved close monitoring of other organ functions, enhanced nutrition, physical rehabilitation, and advanced lung recovery manoeuvres while Shaurya was on ECMO support.
“When Shaurya was admitted, his lungs were fully affected and stiff and were unable to supply oxygen. With ECMO support his lungs were rested and gradually allowed to heal on their own. In time, they regained enough function to be able to support him,” Dr Vijil Rahulan, Chief, Transplant Pulmonology, KIMS, said.
Dr Prabhat Dutta, Chief Intensivist, KIMS said it required a herculean effort of care givers, which helped him recover, he said. Dr Abhinay Bollineni, CEO, KIMS Hospitals praised the team led by Dr Sandeep Attawar for saving the life of the child.
