The Shawshank Redemption is considered as one of the greatest films of all time, but it didn’t do well in theatres when it was first released. Over the years, however, it became a favourite of many. The 1994 film was written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.
It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is wrongfully sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murders of his wife and her lover. Over the next two decades, he befriends a fellow prisoner, contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman). He becomes instrumental in a money-laundering operation led by prison warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore appear in supporting roles. The movie received seven Academy Award nominations.
On the anniversary of its release, people are celebrating the iconic movie. “It has been 26 years since #ShawshankRedemption came out in theatres and I’m still thankful to everyone who made our box office flop one of the most beloved movies of all time,” tweeted actor Morgan Freeman.
“Share your favourite movie quotes with me — mine is, ‘I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope’,” added Freeman.
Competition from films such as Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction was considered as one of the reasons for its initial failure at the box office. “I went to see Forrest Gump but it was sold out. I bought a ticket to a movie I had never heard of, The Shawshank Redemption. It’s my favorite movie ever since. The only movie I’ve ever been to where the audience stood and clapped at the end! “get busy Livin, or get busy dyin”, wrote a Twitter user.
“Another reminder that box-office numbers do not correlate with quality of the film. One of the best movies of all times was a huge box-office failure but over the years it’s become one of the most beloved films!,” tweeted a fan.
It is one of the best movies you can watch if you are feeling low. It shows how platonic love between Red and Andy is just as beautiful and powerful as romantic love.
It shows the audience what ‘hope’ means and how it can help you achieve the impossible. The scene where the two friends finally reunite at the beach in Zihuatanejo beautifully shows how hope wins ultimately.
