Hyderabad: A group of about six people were making presentations on developing solutions to solve the problem of air pollution, while another group spoke on how through analyzing different datasets one can look at solving the problem of gender inequality in education.
If you thought these are some highly experienced people giving ideas then you are wrong!
About 75 girl students from different schools of Hyderabad participated in a first-of-its-kind event to discuss the problems facing the society and the possible solutions. These girls have completed a seven week Data Science programme run by WE Hub in association with Mathworks and Women in Data Science (WiDS).
The Girls in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) conference on Tuesday saw about 75 girl students from four schools in Hyderabad presenting on different topics and how they used the publicly available data and Mathworks platform to analyse the data. The presentations by the students also spoke about the possible solutions and challenges that they faced while working on different problem statement.
“Too few women entrepreneurs are there globally and in that the technology entrepreneurs are even less. This is because of the lack of opportunity given to women to understand STEAM. The batch of 75 girls will be the first cohort graduating from our Girls in STEAM programme. We plan to expand it to more schools in the coming years,” said Deepthi Ravula, CEO, WE Hub.
IT and Industries department principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan said that only 3 per cent of CEOs are women and that is because of the many barriers that have been created in the society. “The government wanted to change this narrative and that is how WE Hub got set up. To encourage more women in science and technology, we thought of grooming college and school students and plan to to take this to government schools as well,” Ranjan said.
