Hyderabad: Despite the Central government’s cap on the issue of Food Security Cards (ration cards) to only 41 per cent of the population in the State, the State government, considering the welfare of the poor, sanctioned new ration cards covering nearly 75 per cent of the State population, said Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao instructed the Civil Supplies Department to issue ration cards to all eligible persons in the State. Accordingly, additional 36.92 lakh cards were sanctioned and about 87.68 lakh persons benefited from this move, he said during question hour in the Legislative Assembly here on Thursday.
Since State formation, 9.53 lakh applications were received for new ration cards and of these, 6.70 lakh were found eligible and cards were issued subsequently, he informed. After the Chief Minister’s announcement on the issue of new rations cards on June 8 this year, 800 applications were received till June 10. The exercise of receiving applications is a continuous process, the Minister said. Explaining the reasons for disqualification of applications, he said the system checks the applicants’ details, including annual income and cards are issued accordingly. Persons owning cars, professionals, retired pensioners and government employees are not eligible, he explained.
Kalyana Lakshmi The Civil Supplies Minister said the State government had spent nearly Rs 7,722.80 crore so far towards the implementation of Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes and over 9.31 lakh families were benefitted under the schemes. Of the Rs 7,722.80 crore, Rs 3834.86 crore was spent through BC Welfare Department, Rs 877.82 crore through Tribal Welfare Department, Rs 1,534.53 crore through Minority Welfare Department and Rs 1,475.59 crore through SCD Department, he said.
