Adilabad: Owners of buildings rented by the government to run various hostels for students from Backward Classes (BC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Minority communities are facing inconvenience due to inordinate delay in receiving of rental arrears from concerned departments.
Officials said the BC Welfare department is operating 30 Mahatma Jyotiba Phule residential educational institutions across erstwhile Adilabad district. Seven institutions are located in Adilabad district, while Mancherial district accounts for nine. Eight institutions are situated in Nirmal district and six are in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. While 28 institutions are run in rented buildings, only two have permanent premises.
Similarly, erstwhile Adilabad district has 18 residential schools and colleges for students from minorities communities. Adilabad district has six institutions, while five institutions are in Nirmal district. Mancherial district accounts for three institutions and four institutions are located in Kumram Bheem Asifabad district. All of them are run in rented buildings.
The owners of these buildings regret that monthly rentals of the premises were not paid for at least seven months, causing inconvenience to them. Rents of some buildings rented by the BC welfare department were not cleared for two years. The owners regretted that they were unable to pay EMIs and their CIBIL score was plummeting following their inability to pay instalments of their bank loans.
“We submitted representations to secretaries of the BC, SC, ST and Minorities welfare departments several times requesting to pay the arrears of rent at the earliest. However, our pleas fell on deaf ears. We threatened to lock the classrooms in protest of the delay in clearing the rents from October 2,” S Sharath Rao, an owner from Thandur mandal centre said.
When asked, Regional Coordinating Officer of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Residential BC Residential Educational Institutions Kethavath Gopichand said that rents were delayed due to a fund crunch. He, however, stated that steps were being taken to address the issue and to avoid inconvenience to the owners.
Meanwhile, five out of the total 10 educational institutions belonging to the SC welfare department are run in rented premises in Mancherial district. Rents of the premises were not paid for six to nine months, Kaleshwaram Zone in-charge Aruna Kumari said.
