Hyderabad: After drawing massive crowds for its Telangana Formation Day celebrations in Dallas last year, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) NRI wing is taking its global outreach to Malaysia, where thousands of Telangana-origin NRIs from across Southeast Asia are expected to gather for what organisers described as one of the largest Telugu community events in the region.

The celebrations are being jointly organised by BRS NRI-Malaysia and the Malaysia Telangana Association (MYTA) on June 6. The event will be held at the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) convention centre, one of the country’s largest venues. Organisers are expecting a turnout of 2,500 to 3,000 participants, including Telangana NRIs from Malaysia, Singapore and neighbouring countries.

BRS working president KT Rama Rao and several senior party leaders are expected to attend the celebrations. Cultural programmes showcasing Telangana’s heritage, including replicas of the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam and the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial, along with traditional Telangana cuisine, will form part of the festivities.

Speaking to Telangana Today, BRS NRI global coordinator Mahesh Bigala said Malaysia was selected as the second destination after the successful Dallas event, as part of a broader plan to hold major Formation Day events across different continents and strengthen the party’s engagement with the global Telangana diaspora.

“We initially planned events in six to seven countries across the world. After the United States, we selected Malaysia, which has a large Telugu population, including people from Telangana. Thus, we will be able to reach out to NRIs in Singapore and other countries in the region,” he said.

Mahesh Bigala stated that Malaysia has a long and deep-rooted Telugu presence spanning nearly five generations. He recalled that the Telugu Association of Malaysia had recorded one of the largest overseas participations during the World Telugu Conference organised by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao in Hyderabad a few years ago.

The Malaysia event also comes at a time when the BRS is preparing for a major organisational exercise among overseas supporters. After dissolving all NRI committees as part of the party’s restructuring process recently, a global membership drive is scheduled during June and July. New committees are expected to be constituted after the exercise.

The BRS currently has NRI organisational units in 53 countries, which the party leadership terms the highest international presence of any Indian political party. The party now aims to expand its footprint to at least 75 countries while strengthening direct engagement between Telangana NRIs and the party leadership.

The Malaysia gathering is expected to serve as a launchpad for the next phase of the BRS’s global outreach, with London likely to host the next major event before similar programmes are taken to Australia or New Zealand, South Africa and the Gulf countries. Mahesh Bigala said the idea was to organise major gatherings every six months to connect and consolidate the Telangana diaspora across the world.
