Sangareddy: The faction war within the Congress in Sangareddy has escalated to a point where the All India Congress Committee (AICC) failed to arrive at a consensus on appointing the District Congress Committee (DCC) president.
The impasse follows strong opposition from Zaheerabad MP Suresh Shetkar and Narayankhed MLA Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy to the proposal of appointing NRI leader S Ujwal Reddy, who has the support of Health Minister Damodara Rajanarasimha, PCC working president T Jagga Reddy, Kata Srinivas Goud and others.
Suresh Shetkar’s brother Nagesh Shetkar and Sanjeeva Reddy’s brother Chandrashekhar Reddy were also in the race for the post, but neither managed to secure the support of the Minister or Jagga Reddy.
Interestingly, Jagga Reddy’s wife, T Nirmala Jagga Reddy, is the current DCC president. Since her nomination as chairperson of the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC), she has decided to step down from the DCC post. Jagga Reddy has publicly stated that no one from his family is seeking the position.
Suresh Shetkar reportedly views Ujwal Reddy as a political rival since Ujwal had also sought the Zaheerabad Lok Sabha ticket in 2024. Sanjeeva Reddy, too, believes that Ujwal’s appointment would diminish his political opportunities in the future.
Ujwal Reddy, however, has secured considerable support, including from SETWIN Chairman Giridhar Reddy and former minister A Chandrashekhar, who contested from Zaheerabad and lost, along with several other leaders.
Unable to resolve the dispute, the AICC decided to keep the appointment pending, along with Rangareddy district, even as it announced DCC presidents for all other districts in the State on Saturday.
The high command is likely to take a decision after the local body elections. Until then, Nirmala will continue to serve as DCC president. Meanwhile, Damodara Rajanarasimha is reportedly holding discussions with both the Zaheerabad MP and the Narayankhed MLA in an effort to achieve consensus.
