Hyderabad: As students of the University of Hyderabad (UoH) continue to protest over the Kancha Gachibowli land auction row, similar protests circle around the internet. Netizens join hands in supporting the movement by sharing “ALL EYES ON HCU” and “SAVE HCU BIODIVERSITY” templates on their Instagram stories. The templates were re-shared by over 4,700 users across the internet.
Apart from students, celebs also joined the movement and are questioning the government’s decision to destroy the forested area.
Upasana Kamineni Konidela, a famous entrepreneur and personality from a mega family, reacted to the issue. Taking to Instagram, she wrote, : “If this is happening, where will the animals and birds be rehabilitated? Where are we replanting the tress? Please share the plan.”
Tollywood actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu also extended support against clearing biodiversity rich land in Kancha Gachibowli. She shared the Telangana Today’s report on the ecological effects of the destruction to her Instagram story.
Actor turned politician Prakash Raj also condemned the government’s move. The actor, on X, wrote, “This destruction is not acceptable. This is not good. I stand with the students and citizens against such atrocious acts.” He urged people to share and amplify the protest to protect the future.
YouTuber and educator Dhruv Rathee and numerous politicians, celebrities, influencers and common citizens also joined in criticising the Congress government for clearing greenary in the name of development.
Responding to the social media outrage against the deployment of a huge number of bulldozers inside the university campus, Dhruv Rathee called it unacceptable. He demanded that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should take action and get this destruction stopped in Telangana.
Bollywood actress Dia Mirza took to X, to extend support for the ongoing protest. She wrote, “Students are raising their voices for a future where nature thrives. Forests, not IT parks, offer young people a chance at a sustainable tomorrow. ‘Development’ at the cost of biodiversity is DESTRUCTION. Save Kancha Forest in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.”
Apart from them anchor and actor Anasuya Bharadwaj, actress Rashmi Gautam, and anchor Sravanthi Chokarapu also joined the trend. YouTubers and social media influencers such as Ariyana, Suprita, Bindu Madhavi, Kirak Seetha, Mahesh Vitta and many others have urged the government to stop the destruction and save the biodiversity in the city.
The State government recently decided to auction the 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli and started clearing the trees besides levelling the land as part of pre-auction process.
As per the petition started by Kirti C, who resides next to the forested land, auctioning the land will directly imperil the rich biodiversity, and indirectly, peoples life.
“Famed for its eco-diversity, Kancha Gachibowli is not just a forest, but a green lung, a natural sink making significant contributions to the overall air quality and ameliorating climate change impacts. By absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide, forests are crucial in our fight against global warming,” it read.
The petition, which already has 97,740 signatures, strongly requested the concerned authorities to roll back the proposed auction of Kancha Gachibowli forest land by TGIIC. “Safeguarding our environment is not just an ethical commitment but a survival imperative,” it said and asked more to join the petition.
