Hyderabad: Support for Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s move to oppose the power reforms being forced on the State by the BJP government at the Centre is gaining steam. The All India Power Engineers Federation, welcoming Chandrashekhar Rao’s stand, said electricity employees and engineers have been opposing the Centre’s move to instal meters on agriculture pumpsets.
Federation member P Ratnakar Rao said on Monday apart from Telangana, 13 other States were also against the proposed reforms in the electricity sector. The Telangana State Assembly has already passed a resolution and other States too are following suit. Several States are now openly opposing the electricity reforms, he said.
“This is a welcome move. The Chief Minister’s decision has given us energy to fight against these reforms. An action plan will be announced shortly to intensify our fight at the national level,” Ratnakar Rao said in a statement.
Farmers and agriculture sector would suffer a lot if meters are installed on agriculture pumpsets, he said, adding: “Come what may, we will not permit installation of meters. A massive public meeting would be organised in the State soon involving employees and engineers from all the States.”
The Power Engineers Association has also hailed the Chief Minister’s decision. “We are happy that the Chief Minister is firmly opposed to the power reforms and explained the consequences of implementing the power reforms,” Power Engineers Association general secretary Sadanandam said.
“Buoyed by Chandrashekhar Rao’s decision, employees and engineers from other States have been calling us over phone and extending their support in opposing the reforms, especially to safeguard the power sector,” he said, and stressed on the need to fight against such moves at the national level.
