Karimnagar: The stage is all set to allocate wine shop licences to applicants. The Excise Department officials would allocate licenses to applicants through the draw of lots in the presence of the Collectors in all district headquarters on Saturday. Officials have received a number of applications on Thursday, the last day to submit applications for liquor shop licences.

A total of 5,097 candidates submitted their applications for 290 shops in the erstwhile Karimnagar district. Excise Department registered Rs 101.94 crore towards application fee as the government fixed Rs 2 lakh for each application. As many as 1,694 candidates made applications for 94 wine shops in Karimnagar district followed by Jagtial-1,445 applications for 71 shops, Peddapalli-1,058 for 77 shops and Rajanna-Sircilla- 900 applications for 48 wine shops.

Earlier, people, who were in the liquor business, used to file applications for licences. Unlike the routine practice, freshers also made applications this time around as the State government provided reservations for Gouda and SC communities.

Excise Dept earns Rs 209.68 cr

As many as 10,483 applications were submitted for retail liquor shop licences in the erstwhile Khammam district helping the Prohibition and Excise Department earn Rs 209.68 crore in the form of non-refundable licence fees.

Incidentally, Khammam district topped in the State in terms of the highest number of applications followed by Bhadradri Kothagudem district. Khammam and Kothagudem stood at first two places in the State with a total of 6,212 and 4,271 applications respectively.

The number of applications increased this time in both Khammam and Kothagudem districts in comparison to the previous policy period as prospective traders showed great interest in getting the licences for the new liquor policy period 2021-23.
