A while ago, the American Dairy Association North East had come up with an idea of butter sculptures as a marketing trick. But with time, it turned out to be a yearly tradition.
This year, the dairy firm and the New York State Fair have yet again shared one of the event’s most enduring traditions — the annual butter sculpture.
Marking the 53rd iteration, the butter sculpture features three vignettes and is titled “Back to School, Sports, and Play… You’re Gonna Need Milk for That.”
“As we take steps to get our youth back to a routine of academics and recreation, this year’s butter sculpture, sponsored by Wegmans, depicts how milk helps energise their return to ‘nearly normal’ activities,” the dairy association said in a statement, referring to changes in routine resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
The butter sculpture, which involves more than 800 pounds of butter from O-AT-KA Milk Products in Batavia, is divided into a creamy three-part work – teenagers in a school cafeteria, on a soccer field and at home gaming.
It was crafted over 10 days by artists Jim Victor and Marie Pelton of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.
Once the fair ends, the butter sculpture will be deconstructed and taken to Noblehurst Farms in Linwood, a hamlet in the town of York, Livingston County, and recycled in a methane digester to create renewable energy, the dairy association stated.
Because the fair was cancelled last year, the butter sculpture created by Victor and Pelton was presented virtually on Facebook. Titled “Nourishing Our Future”, it featured two scenes of masked school children being served milk.
The 2021 fair runs from August 20 to September 6 at the fair’s Dairy Products Building.
