Mancherial: An ancient idol of Goddess Durga was discovered during excavations taken up by a group of priests, seers and pontiffs on the banks of the Godavari river in Mulkalla village in Hajipur mandal on Monday, drawing devotees. The group was touring the district as part of the Godavari Parikrama Yatra.
An idol of Durga Devi, riding a lion, was found when the seers and the priest of Sriram Mandir at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, along with other seers and pontiffs, dug up the earth following a prediction. The priest, seers and pontiffs earlier performed special prayers before beginning the excavations. A priest had predicted that the place was endowed with some unknown force beneath it.
On learning about the discovery, people from Mulkalla, neighbouring villages and Mancherial town made a beeline to catch a glimpse of the idol. They performed prayers and broke coconuts. They clicked images and videos of the idol and widely shared them on social media platforms.
Locals said that they would construct a temple and place the idol there. They opined that they were fortunate to have witnessed the discovery of the idol of the deity. The owner of the land agreed to donate the spot for the temple.
