Assistant Prof and his friends feeding Covid patients at Bhadrachalam

Kothagudem: An initiative of the head of Department of History of Government Degree College, Bhadrachalam has been providing much needed relief to the Covid-19 patients who are in home quarantine. The department head and his three friends with the support of the college principal has been providing two meals a day, free of cost, to the Covid patients at Bhadrachalam town and at K Dummugudem village in Dummugudem mandal in the district.
The food packets, for lunch and dinner, have been delivered at the doorstep of the patients before the lunch time everyday since May 10, on which the ASP, Vineeth G formally launched the programme.
“We planned to continue the programme till May 31 to help the covid patients. At present as many as 150 persons are being served food”, Assistant Professor and head of History Department, Vemula Kameshwar Rao told Telangana Today.
The number of persons serving food is increasing day by day with a spike in the covid positive cases. On Saturday six more Covid patients are added. In addition to door to door delivery, a distribution centre is also set up at Dasara Mandapam at Government Hospital, he said.
“The pandemic caused a crisis in the lives of many. I wanted to lend a helping hand to the covid patients by serving food to them. And my friends, Charugulla Srinivas, Dammalapati Janakiram and Charugulla Padma Venkata Ramana came forward to join me and we collectively are bearing the expenses” Rao noted explaining how he ventured out on the task.
The college principal, Doddi Bhadraiah has also extended his support to the task. A cook, two helpers, three persons for packing and six persons for delivering the food packets have been hired and all of them are being paid.
Each packet contains two meals each with rice, a curry, black pepper rasam, curd, egg or banana. The preparation of food and its delivery is being done duly following the Covid protocols, Rao noted adding that he himself is delivering food packets to nearly 30 patients at K Dummugudem village.
It may be noted Rao had distributed food to poor covid patients in Dummugudem mandal during the first wave of the covid last year. He annually dedicates 10 percent of his salary to charity works he takes up through Vemula Sambaiah-Subbamma Trust.
