Selling something basic for a whooping price, in the name of ‘fashion’, seems to have become the marketing gimmick for luxury brands in recent times. Well, now, luxury fashion house Balenciaga may have crossed the line this time – selling a shopping bag for the price of Rs 1.5 lakh.
The Barbes Large East-West Shopper Bag in a blue shade is priced at $2,090 (Rs 1.53 lakh) on the website of Balenciaga. “Barbes Large East-West Shopper Bag in blue, white and red check printed and embossed calfskin,” the products description reads.
It has one inner zip pocket and one inner patch pocket, along with two handles and two removable straps. But to Indians, the bag simply looks like the tote bag or ‘thaila’ you take to the grocery store.
Sharing about the bag, an Instagram user posted with the text, “Balenciaga selling ‘pishvi’ at $2000 is something I never thought I’ll ever see.”
The post is captioned, “tag a marathi friend and ask them what is a pishvi(sic).”
Immediately, the post went viral leaving netizens in splits. One user explained that a pishvi means “Thaili … Angrezi me carry bag(sic).” Another user said, “TIL I have four Balenciaga bags at home(sic).”
A third user posted, “brb grabbing one from my aaji’s collection to call it ‘heirloom’(sic)”. Yet another wrote, “I think either my aaji (grandma) is secretly a Balenciaga designer or they just flat out stole out designs(sic).”
The post has garnered more than 2,593 likes and counting.
