Ballari: In a daring late-night operation, the Ballari patrol police caught a thief red-handed while attempting to rob an ATM, in an incident fully captured on CCTV. The footage shows Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mallikarjuna confronting the accused in a tense and at times violent struggle.
The arrested accused has been identified as Venkatesh, a resident of Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Acting on specific intelligence, ASI Mallikarjuna intercepted Venkatesh as he was trying to carry away the ATM cash box from an Axis Bank kiosk near Kalamma Circle.
Despite the element of surprise, the accused fought back, attempting to attack the ASI in an effort to escape. Unfazed by the aggression, ASI Mallikarjuna physically restrained him, effectively turning the arrest into what bystanders described as a “circus act” to subdue the determined suspect.
Realizing the potential danger, Mallikarjuna immediately called for reinforcement. Constable Ningappa rushed to the spot and assisted in overpowering the accused. Together, the officers managed to tie him up before transporting him to the police station.
The dramatic CCTV footage — which shows the ASI’s brave confrontation despite the risk — has been widely shared, earning the officers praise for their courage and quick thinking.
Ballari Superintendent of Police Dr. Shobharani commended the team for their swift action. “The officers acted with exceptional bravery in apprehending the accused and preventing the theft. This is an example of the dedication and alertness of our force,” she said in a statement.
The accused is now in police custody, and further investigation is underway to determine if he is linked to other thefts in the region. Authorities say the incident underscores the importance of active night patrols in deterring crime and protecting public assets.
