Hyderabadis look at bamboo being a probable eco-friendly and sleek furniture option

Hyderabad: Relishing that refreshing cup of morning coffee while swinging on a beautifully crafted cane swing hanging on the balcony, has become a dream come true for many specially after the eye-opening pandemic.

It is not only the cane swing but several furniture choices in the recent past are seen pointing towards environment-friendly choices – either made by bamboo or cane.

However, this eco-conscious furniture and interior decorative look sleeker than ever with the makers leaving no stone unturned to catch people’s attention back to the traditional furniture in the modernistic world.

“Until a few years ago, we saw a major downfall with other kinds of furniture made of metal, plastic and other material being available easily and at lower costs. However, now people understand how bamboo furniture is better and thus returning to the basics,” says Syed Dastagir who owns a cane and bamboo furniture store in Secunderabad.

Asked how bamboo, as he suggests, is the most environmentally friendly product, he explains, “Bamboo is a grass that grows rapidly. After being felled, a new bamboo shoot comes up almost immediately and grows up to 4ft in a day. Whereas, trees take around 15 years minimum to grow completely and provide mature raw material,” he adds.

A grandfather’s bamboo chair of old times which sustains for generations together, clearly explains the longevity and strength of bamboo furniture. Explaining the secret behind the longevity, Baandur Vishnu, a bamboo craftsman says, “Bamboo grass is one of the strongest plants. When built with the right strength-to-weight ratio, depending on the end product, this bamboo furniture sustains as long as concrete or steel. Also, unlike many other furniture types, bamboo furniture can be repaired and made to look new within no time.”

Adding, Vishnu explains that the craftsmanship has gone under a lot of experimentation in an attempt to give a modern twist to the age-old furniture.

These bamboo and cane furniture are handcrafted and thus can be customized in any shape and size. Though at a pricy edge when compared to other kinds of furniture, bamboo promises a piece of long and guilt-free furniture.
