Karimnagar: Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s bicycle distribution programme, under which he plans to provide 20,000 bicycles to Class X students in government schools across his Karimnagar parliamentary constituency, has sparked doubts about its intent.
The Minister launched the initiative on July 9 and has since expanded it to several places. However, opposition parties allege the move carries political undertones.
They questioned why the scheme was limited only to Class X students, even though many younger children also walk long distances to reach their schools. According to them, Sanjay Kumar’s real aim is to nurture a strong vote bank ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Class X students are currently aged 15 to 16 years and would become eligible to vote by then.
Though not all of the 20,000 beneficiaries may support him, opposition leaders argue that many could, and their families might also tilt towards him out of gratitude.
During distribution, Sanjay Kumar reiterated that he had won the 2019 elections with the support of young voters and children, claiming that though children did not cast votes, they had influenced their parents to do so.
Critics allege that his references to his own struggles with poverty, alongside the bicycle distribution drive, are part of a carefully designed strategy to emotionally connect with and influence young voters.
