Hyderabad: The Telangana BC Commission on Friday said that injustice was being done to the community over extending statutory reservations, and demanded an amendment to the Constitution to ensure 42 per cent reservations for BCs in the State.
BC Commission Chairman G Niranjan and Members expressed condolences on the death of Sai Eshwar Chary, who passed away at Gandhi Hospital. The Commission observed a two-minute silence in his memory.
They said that to achieve statutory BC reservations, people should continue the struggle while staying alive and should not resort to extreme measures.
Niranjan said that while the Constitution provides reservations for SCs and STs, allowing them to get educational, employment and political reservations according to their population, BCs were denied the same despite a survey being conducted in Telangana and the Assembly passing a Bill approving 42 per cent reservations.
“Since protection of reservations for BCs is not provided in the Constitution, it should be amended to ensure 42 per cent reservations for BCs in Telangana,” he said in a statement.
Earlier, marking the 69th death anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution, BR Ambedkar, floral tributes were offered to his portrait at the Telangana BC Commission office, where a two-minute silence was also observed.
BC Commission Members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender, Balalakshmi Rangu and officials took part in the programme.
