Hyderabad: It’s the weekend and it is time to kickback and relax with a binge-watching session of a gripping series and this week, we recommend The Queen’s Gambit.
What makes this series perfect for the monsoon weekend is that it has only seven episodes. Based on the 1983 novel of the same name, this series follows the life of Beth Harmon, a fictitious chess prodigy during the cold-war era.
It starts off in the mid-1950s, with then 9-year-old Beth being orphaned in a road accident. She discovers chess in her orphanage when she chances upon a custodian, Mr. Shaibel gazing at a complex move on a chessboard. Beth’s life changes from that moment and she sets about on a journey of consistent rise as a chess player, albeit struggling with emotional and mental issues in addition to alcohol and substance abuse.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s gritty portrayal of the substance-abusing-unerring-prodigy in a male-dominated arena won her several Best Actress awards, including the Golden Globe Award.
While the series is dark at times, showing the character’s mental health issues and dependence on drugs, it also is inspiring in a way as the overall interest in chess increased greatly after this series was released. Chess.com, a popular online chess website, reported millions of new users since the series released, with a major increase in the number of female players.
