Hyderabad: Legendary composer AR Rahman, known as the “Mozart of Madras,” is celebrating his 58th birthday today. Rahman is credited with putting Indian music on the global stage and continues to inspire millions worldwide.
Born as Dileep Kumar Rajagopala, Rahman faced hardships early in life. After losing his father at the age of 9, his family struggled financially. With the unconditional support of his mother, Rahman pursued music full-time, starting his formal training under Master Dhanraj at the age of 11.
Rahman’s journey began with his father’s friend MK Arjunan’s orchestra. He later graduated with a diploma in Western Classical Music.
His first major breakthrough came in 1992 with his debut film Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam. Since then, Rahman has become an icon, winning prestigious awards such as National Awards, Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
