Hyderabad: Polishing works on the Jagadananda Vimanam, the main tower above the sanctum sanctorum of the city’s popular shrine, Birla Mandir, have been completed as part of a larger restoration initiative ahead of the temple’s Golden Jubilee celebrations scheduled for February 2026.
The chemical restoration process involved meticulous attention to detail, with skilled artisans working tirelessly for two months to achieve the desired finish. The works formed part of a broader effort to preserve the temple’s architectural beauty.
“The chemical work was undertaken with great care to ensure the historical and spiritual significance of the structures was respected and preserved. After polishing, the tower returned to its original beauty as first built in 1976,” Shankerlal Sharma, who oversees the temple administration and ongoing polishing works, told ‘Telangana Today’.
The main tower, known as Jagadananda Vimanam, rises 11 feet above the sanctum where the presiding deity Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy is enshrined. Built in the Oriya style of architecture, it is made of granite and faced with milky white marble imported from Rajasthan, he said.
Polishing works have now begun on the gopurams of the presiding deity’s consorts, Padmavati and Andal, located in adjoining shrines, as well as on the Raja Gopuram. The work on the Garuda temple in front of the presiding deity has also been taken up, said Shankerlal Sharma.
By January 2026, all polishing works at Birla Mandir will be completed, and in February, the temple management is planning grand Golden Jubilee celebrations, he added.
