BIS seizes 1.6 kg gold jewellery in Hallmarking violation raid in Hyderabad

The Bureau of Indian Standards conducted a raid at a jewellery shop in Hyderabad's Abids area and seized approximately 1.6 kg of gold ornaments for alleged hallmarking violations. BIS has initiated action and urged consumers to verify jewellery authenticity through its app.

Hyderabad: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad, conducted a search and seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Abids, Hyderabad, on Monday, June 22, for violation of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016 and the mandatory Hallmarking requirements notified by the Government of India, a press release said.

During the inspection, which was led by Sattu Savitha, Director and Scientist-E, along with other enforcement officials, found gold jewellery articles being offered for sale without mandatory BIS Hallmark and also detected jewellery articles bearing old hallmark markings, which are in violation of the provisions under the BIS Act, 2016, release said.


A total of approximately 1.6 kg of gold jewellery, which included rings, necklaces and pendants, was seized during the operation. BIS has initiated further action under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016 against the concerned establishment.

Speaking on the occasion, PV Srikanth, Director and Head, BIS Hyderabad, said, “Consumers should purchase only BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the BIS Logo, Purity Mark and HUID number. Before making a purchase, consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery through the BIS CARE App. Any instance of sale of non-hallmarked jewellery or misuse of BIS Hallmark may be reported to BIS through the BIS CARE App or the nearest BIS office.”
