Hyderabad: Coming down heavily on the BJP government, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao said the Centre had not extended any support to Telangana and failed to deliver the benefits assured in the AP Reorganisation Act.
Tribal University, Bayyaram Steel Factory, Kazipet Coach Factory and many other projects were assured to Telangana, but not one was delivered, he said at a press conference here on Sunday.
Chandrashekhar Rao, who was in a combative mood at the media interaction, listed out the failed promises made to the fledgling State of Telangana. He said as per the Reorganisation Act, the Centre was to sanction Rs 450 crore as Backward Regions Grant Fund, but it was still pending. Not a single medical college was granted to Telangana, while 157 colleges were sanctioned to other States. Even in case of Navodaya schools, the Centre had not sanctioned a single school, though it was bound to sanction one to each district.
Impressed with Mission Kakatiya, Niti Ayog had recommended to the Centre to sanction Rs 24,000 crore to Telangana. “But the Centre has not even given Rs 24.” He wondered what the State BJP president and MP Bandi Sanjay and the Union Minister G Kishan Reddy were doing with respect to these unfulfilled promises.
Even in case of formation of the High Court in Telangana, the Centre took five years to do so. “Why was it delayed so much and what was the reason behind the delay?” he sought to know. He maintained that his government did not adopt a confrontationist attitude towards the Centre as “we wanted to maintain cordial relations with the Centre”. But time has now come to fight for the welfare of the State, he said.
Regarding river water sharing disputes and the KRMB, he said the Centre was keeping the issues pending for the last seven years. “Why can’t the Centre refer the issue to the tribunal? I demand Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekawat to refer the matter to the tribunal immediately,” demanded Rao. He said the BJP government was known for triggering passions citing international border issues with Pakistan and China, and derive political mileage. Chinese troops had invaded into Arunachal Pradesh and the Centre had not initiated any steps to counter them, he charged. “India’s GDP is lower than neighbouring Nepal, Bangladesh and others. This shows the inefficiency and irresponsibility of the Central government,” Chandrashekhar Rao fumed.
