Hyderabad: BJP MP from Nizamabad Dharmapuri Arvind tasted the ire of people on Tuesday and had to cut short his visit when turmeric farmers obstructed his convoy and raised slogans demanding his resignation as he failed to get the Turmeric Board sanctioned to Nizambad, as per his election promise.
Tension gripped Issapally village in Armur mandal in Nizamabad district on Tuesday afternoon following a confrontation between turmeric farmers and Arvind’s followers over the inordinate delay in setting up a turmeric board. Trouble broke out when the irate farmers stopped his convoy when he was on his way to Nandipet.
The farmers were demanding the resignation of Arvind as he failed to fulfil his promise made during the Parliament elections in 2019 that he would set up a turmeric board in the district if he won the election.
Displaying the bond paper signed and given by Arvind during the elections, the farmers demanded that he immediately tender his resignation for failing to set up the board.
Holding placards, the farmers raised slogans denouncing the apathetic attitude of the BJP MP in fulfilling his election promise. The BJP workers who were following Arvind have attacked the farmers and jostled with them.
The windscreen of a vehicle in the MP’s convoy was also damaged in the melee. Sensing that the situation was turning out of control, police swung into action and used mild force to disperse the two warring groups.
The farmers in two other villages including Nandipet planned to register their protest during Arvind’s visit. However, the police pacified them.
Earlier in the day, Arvind and his party leaders staged a protest at Armur alleging that the police failed to take action against the TRS leaders, who are planning to obstruct his visit to the villages in the district on Tuesday.
He alleged that the police failed to take necessary preventive steps even after giving prior information to them on Monday night. Though the police tried to pacify him saying that it would not be advisable to visit Nandipet, the BJP MP ignored the suggestion resulting in confrontation when he reached Issapally village in the afternoon.
Special police pickets were posted in Issapally, Nandipet and two other villages to prevent any untoward incidents.
