Hyderabad: After Siddipet, the State IT and Electronics and Communication department has now taken up a pilot project for fixing RFID tags or QR code enabled system to track the inventory of gunny bags in Jangaon.
The department has taken up a project using blockchain to track the distribution of gunny bags in January. Under this initiative, RFID tags or QR codes were fixed to over 1,600 gunny bags and their movement or location was tracked through a mobile app.
The solution is a blockchain-based intelligent hybrid application that works with both RFID and QR Code technologies to track the bag inventory and trace origin of the rice accumulated across the supply chain from point of origin i.e. the mill to the Fair Price Shops, Emerging Technologies tweeted.
In partnership with TS Civil Supplies department, the blockchain-based solution for gunny bags tracking under the Public Distribution System (PDS) was launched on a pilot basis in Siddipet and Jangaon districts, Emerging Technologies further tweeted.

Through the app, officials track the source of gunny bags, delivery point, purpose for which the bag was used and the batch details of the bags. As part of the pilot project, a Wi-Fi set up would be installed at the Mandal Level Stock (MLS) point to facilitate internet service and fix RFID tags and QR codes to gunny bags.
The move to conduct pilot projects comes in the wake of challenges being faced by civil supplies department to arrange gunny bags for supply of food grains through PDS and tracking them.
The department uses about 110 million bags for supply of food grains but not all bags return to the department. At least, 30 per cent of the procured bags go missing. They either get misplaced or are sold in the open market by dealers, despite the civil supplies department willing to purchase the gunny bags.
