Nizamabad: Tension prevailed in Bheemgal during Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao’s visit to the village in Balkonda constituency on Wednesday. Police resorted to lathicharge after BRS leaders questioned the Minister over not releasing one tola gold under Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes as promised in election manifesto.

A heated exchange between Krishna Rao and former Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy on the absence of one tola gold, escalated into a scuffle between Congress and BRS workers. To disperse the crowd, the police resorted to lathicharge, severely injuring several BRS leaders who in turn staged a rasta roko.

Prashanth Reddy who participated in the dharna, said police assaulted BRS workers who had questioned unfulfilled promises. “They lathi-charged our activists for simply asking when the promised Rs 2,500 to women will be given and one tola gold will be released,” he said. He stated that the Minister tried to give lame excuses to avoid direct answer and instigated police to attack them.

Former Minister and BRS senior MLA T Harish Rao condemned the incident, asking, “Is it a crime to ask about one tola gold which was promised by the Congress to win elections?” He demanded action from the DGP and Nizamabad SP against the erring police personnel.

BRS MLC K Kavitha also slammed Minister Jupally Krishna Rao for inciting police action. “Is this people’s government or police rule? People have a right to question,” she said, demanding FIRs against Congress workers who attacked the BRS activists and explanation from the police.
