Hyderabad: Former MLA Methuku Anand accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of terrorising journalists and misusing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for settling political score and protecting the government. Condemning the arrests of journalists during a festival season, he said it indicated that the government feared criticism and wanted to silence dissent.
Addressing a press meet at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday, Anand said the Chief Minister was tapping the phones of his own Ministers and getting negative articles published against them in the media. He observed that the SIT was formed solely to give Revanth Reddy a clean chit, divert attention from internal conflicts and also the Congress party’s poor performance in the recent Panchayat elections.
The former legislator argued that the SIT was being misused to target opposition voices, while ignoring serious allegations within the ruling party. He cited cases where Congress leaders allegedly threatened contractors, including accusations that former MLA Sampath Kumar demanded Rs 8 crore from a highway contractor. He asked why no SIT investigations were ordered into allegations made by Minister Konda Surekha’s daughter against the Chief Minister, alleged corruption involving the Chief Minister’s relatives, or allegations against the Ministers and senior Congress leaders.
Asserting that the BRS will return to power next, he warned that those harassing and politically targeting the BRS cadre, will be repaid with interest.
BRS leaders Nagender Goud and Shubhaprad Patel accused the Congress government of suppressing dissent and using the SIT to intimidate political opponents and journalists. They demanded action against Congress leaders accused of harassing contractors and warned that the government’s approach would erode public trust.
