Hyderabad: A BRS delegation will meet the Justice K Balakrishnan Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday to press for Scheduled Caste (SC) status for Dalit Christians. The delegation will comprise BRS general secretary RS Praveen Kumar, Rajya Sabha MP Vaddiraju Ravichandra, former Minister Koppula Eshwar and party leader Mede Rajiv Sagar.
The BRS will submit a memorandum arguing that conversion to Christianity does not erase the social discrimination and backwardness faced by Dalits and that they should continue to enjoy the constitutional safeguards available to SCs. The party will also seek an amendment to the Presidential Order of 1950, which currently denies SC status to Dalit Christians. The party leaders will also present the resolution passed by the Telangana Assembly during the tenure of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao supporting the demand.
