Hyderabad: The BRS has accused the Congress government of betraying BCs by failing to provide legal backing to the promised 42 per cent reservation in local body elections. The party leaders demanded immediate measures in this regard, ahead of the local body polls.

Addressing mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council S Madhusudhana Chari said the Congress was neglecting the legality of the BC reservations, despite having opportunities to implement them effectively. He reminded that Tamil Nadu had secured the BC quota, but the Revanth Reddy government turned a deaf ear to BRS’s suggestions in this regard. He also faulted Rahul Gandhi for remaining silent on the issue despite repeated appeals.

Former Minister V Srinivas Goud demanded that the reservations be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard it from legal hurdles. “Even before the government issued any orders, some people appeared to have approached the courts. What does the government plan to do if the courts strike down the orders?” he asked.

Former Minister and MLA Gangula Kamalakar questioned the government’s delay. “If elections are to be held with 42 per cent reservations, why has the GO not been issued in last 22 months?” he asked, terming the court petitions before a GO as a Congress conspiracy.

The BRS leaders warned of serious political consequences if the government failed to act. They vowed to pursue legal and political remedies until BC reservations are secured.
