Hyderabad: Coming down heavily on the Congress government for the loss of prominence of Bathukamma celebrations in the State, BRS MLC Dasoju Shravan and Musheerabad MLA Mutha Gopal on Saturday voiced concern over the fact that women’s development in the State was sidelined while the civic infrastructure in Hyderabad was left to crumble.
Crediting former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao for elevating Bathukamma as a powerful symbol of the struggle, they said, “KCR had immortalised Bathukamma by depicting the Telangana Thalli statue holding a millet sheaf in one hand and Bathukamma in the other, igniting the pride of Telangana’s soul.”
However, they expressed deep anguish over recent changes to the statue and called it a heartbreaking betrayal of the State’s identity.
Speaking at a media interaction in the Shaikpet division of Jubilee Hills constituency, Shravan announced that grand Bathukamma immersion rituals are scheduled for Sunday at Shaikpet’s Sakkubai Grounds and invited people to join the celebrations in a big way.
Turning to welfare initiatives, he pointed out that during the BRS regime, sarees were distributed to women as part of cultural support programmes. But the Congress government has abandoned such initiatives, leaving women unsupported.
This year, Bathukamma rituals will be observed in Jubilee Hills with pomp and fervour. “Thousands of women will participate in the event,” Shravan said.
Shravan decried the garbage crisis, pointing to irregular waste collection, issues with sewage systems, and deteriorating roads that are transforming the city into a “Garbageabad.”
“Under the leadership of K. T. Rama Rao as the then Minister for Municipal Administration, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) undertook numerous development projects, but the Congress government is completely neglecting GHMC, allowing the city’s infrastructure to crumble,” he charged.
