Adilabad: Having already secured one municipality, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is now making all efforts to secure the chairperson posts in Kagaznagar, Bellampalli and Khanapur municipalities in the erstwhile Adilabad district.
The BRS-Communist Party of India (CPI) alliance captured Kyathanpalli municipality with 10 and four wards respectively, dealing a blow to the ruling Indian National Congress and Labour Minister G Vivek. The Congress had to be content with seven wards, while an independent candidate registered victory in one ward.
Buoyed by the success in Kyathanpalli, the BRS has now set its sights on Kagaznagar, Bellampalli and Khanapur municipalities. The party is learnt to be following strategies, including attracting independents and forming coalitions with smaller parties, to capture the civic bodies. It has shocked the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party by retaining control and strengthening its position in these municipalities.
The BRS won 11 wards in the 30-member Kagaznagar municipality, while the Congress bagged nine wards and the BJP secured five wards. Independents emerged victorious in four wards and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen bagged one ward, helping them hold the balance of power. Former Sirpur (T) MLA Koneru Konappa was instrumental in ensuring that independents and AIMIM extended support to the BRS in its efforts to capture the civic body.
The BRS leadership also played a vital role in ensuring that two independents joined the party and a BJP councillor promised support in the election of the chairperson in the 34-member Bellampalli municipality, strengthening its prospects. The party is banking on its own 14 wards to achieve the absolute majority mark of 18 and is confident of reclaiming the municipality by securing the chairperson post.
The party is also said to have strengthened its position in the 12-member Khanapur municipality by convincing councillors from other parties to support it. It won four wards, falling three short of the required majority. However, it is making moves to secure control, with three Congress councillors extending support. Local leaders expressed confidence in winning the chairperson post.
